The law firm of Crouch, Spangler & Douglas has a long and rich history in Cass County, Missouri. Leslie M. Crouch founded the firm upon graduation from Washington and Lee University in 1895. Mr. Crouch served as probate judge for Cass County from 1902 until 1910, when he opened his Harrisonville law office above the Bank of Harrisonville.
Judge Crouch's son, Leslie M. Crouch Jr., (known fondly as "LM") joined his father in the Harrisonville practice in 1921 after receiving his law degree at the University of Missouri at Columbia. The firm expanded, and in the 1950s added Robert W. Spangler and Elvin S. Douglas Jr. as partners.
In 1964, James E. Thompson Jr. joined the firm, which had acquired the bank building and expanded its office. In 1976, the firm expanded again by purchasing the adjoining Deacon Building.
By 1981, both Judge Crouch and LM Crouch had retired, but the firm retained the name of Crouch in respect for the historic contribution of the Crouch family to the legal history of Cass County. Robert Spangler retired from the firm in 2004.
The firm presently has five partners, in addition to Mr. Douglas and Mr. Thompson:
- Charles E. Weedman Jr., joined the firm in 1978
- Linda L. Sherman joined in 1979
- Aaron L. Aurand joined in 1986
- Meryl L. Lange joined in 1990, and
- T.R. Hoefle joined in 2004
- Lynn S. Laffoon joined in 2006
